Preserving Indigenous Knowledge for Sustainable Development

Indigenous knowledge systems hold deep relevance for contemporary sustainable development. This article examines how Maasai practices in ecology, governance, health and community organisation align with and strengthen global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

At Maa Museum of Heritage, we document and advance these knowledge systems, demonstrating that heritage is not a relic of the past but a living resource for building resilient, sustainable futures. From traditional land stewardship to community-based decision making, Indigenous wisdom offers tested models for development that is both culturally grounded and environmentally sound.

Through research, documentation and partnership, we work to ensure that Indigenous knowledge informs policy, education and practice at local, national and international levels.
